Default Suggestion: Supreme Armor Competition

This suggestion can be found in the official Guild Wars game suggestions on GW Wiki. I'm posting here to see if I can get some feedback.

Quote:
=== Supreme Armor ===
Supreme armor (in lack of another name) is the ultimate money sink, an armor set for the richest people. This is for the people who have more money than they can spend, who wants something better than the bland-looking Obsidian armor, and to bring their legacy onwards towards Guild Wars 2.

== 1. First the competition! ==
It will start with a competition where people compete in designing the best looking armor for all professions. Preferrably armor that can be designed for both Guild Wars 1, and Guild Wars 2. The winners will see their designs come to life as the most exclusive armor Guild Wars 1 have to offer. 1st price is 5 Supreme Armor Tokens that is needed in exchange for one of these armor sets. Theese tokens are Non-Tradeable, but they can be transferred within the account through the Xunlai Storage. Honorable prices might include 1-5 of theese tokens.

== 2. The armor sets are designed ==
Theese will be highly expensive and very rare, but it will also require items that you can only get while playing various aspects of the game. For example completing dungeons, missions etc. I suggest an NPC that accepts a full Hard Mode story book in exchange for a special unique item needed. For example, a complete book of "Shiro's Return [Hard Mode]" could grant you an "Essence of Shiro". A number of theese items is needed in exchange for a Supreme Armor Token. The design winners will then get a headstart as they already have 1-5 Supreme Tokens.

== 3. Crafting the armor ==
Each armor piece is crafted throughout the world in an end-game hard mode area. For example, defeating Kanaxai in Hard Mode will could you to craft shoes, defeating Urgoz is needed for gloves, and in similar ways for head piece, leggings, and chest. Main item needed will be a Supreme Token plus additional expensive material. So even the concept winners are not home free, they still have to complete some end game areas and pay for expensive crafing materials.

== 3. The Guild Wars Legacy ==
Placing this armor set in your Hall of Monuments will also grant you to get the same armor appearance in Guild Wars 2, assuming the armor sets was designed for both games as a legacy armor.

== 4. PvP alternative ==
To give the PvP community a chance for this armor as well, perhaps it can be added as a PvP-reward as well. It will require some outstanding winnings in various PvP-formats, and the final reward will be an unlocked armor appearance to upgrade your PvP armor. Unlocking a full set should also grant them the Guild Wars legacy, allowing them to use the armor appearance in Guild Wars 2.

=== End Notes ===
Many people might complain this is way too expensive and that it only caters to the richest people in the game. This may be true, but as all parts involved deals with non-tradeable items, this shouldn't have any noticeable impact on the current market. Main purpose is that it gives the richest people a huge money sink, they have something more than a dressing level 7 mules in Obsidian armor, and it will become a big money sink in the game.

Its not a reasonable money sink though. GWs needed gradual money sinks besides the merchants and armor crafters. I also think its too late to implement something such as this with the WoC update being the last major content update.

I welcome the idea of a new, very expensive armor, but if you can obtain these "essences" and such through grinding regular HM over and over it wouldn't really be prestige imo. Since nothing is really hard and most can be done with heroes money sink items are best achieved by pure luck, like rare minis.

Could just call it DoA armor and have it cost a stack of arms or something.

Ideas are certainly welcome. Where do you think these items should drop without making it into a very boring grind? How about.. any mob in an elite area have a 0.0001% chance droprate. Low enough not to encourage mindless grind, but still a chance as a random lucky drop when doing the elite area for other reasons.

I actually like this idea... anyone remember the odds of legitly finding a high rune in Diablo 2? Like that only with pieces of the "supreme" armor and whoever got a piece would be pretty leet considering not many people would have them. I think there are enough money sinks in the game.

Let's say you get lucky and a 'piece' of the supreme armor drops, you must take that piece to whichever crafter Anet deems worthy and add a special fee (your money sink) along with the the armor piece and the crafter will 'fix' your choice of armor piece like the hands, feet, or helm etc.

I said piece far too many time, I know it annoys even me.

I don't think there's gonna be any change to GW1 what so ever beside skillpupdates and beyond content. But......
To keep the community busy till GW2, it would be nice to have something more then the HoM rewards alone. More and more people have the HoM on 50/50. To keep them tied to the game I think its a good idea to put a new money sink into the game that gives an unique armorset in GW2 (or something else)

It would have been fun to see all the concept art contestants would create as well, as well as the roses or critics from the community. Ultimately I would hope it would be some form of voting as well from a selection first picked by Anet. I like the idea of the main token needed for an armor piece being a random drop as long as it's rare enough not to warrant hours of farming to get one. It will drop when it drops, while not expecting it.

I'll sign anything that will add more content for HoM, and possibly unlock different things for GW2.

We've been able to add things to HoM for 3+ years now and they've only added Tormented and Oppressor weapons since then, not to mention that they made HoM account based for GW2 made it even easier to collaborate all your character's achievements.

Don't care if it costs 500 ectos, I'll get it.

Where would players get the tokens from, except from the "designing competition", I didn't see it there or am I blind? or are these tokens bought with the super high material cost.

Based on original idea or from suggestions,
1. Either from a quest chain including turning in full hardmode books, or
2. As a very very rare drop, mainly from foes in high end areas.

If such a thing existed, Zaishen Coins plus gold and materials would be a reasonable price.

But there's already a legacy armor set, and armors are pretty hard to come by. I'd rather have Luxon and Kurzick elite sets for dervish and paragon so any profession can fill the HoM by itself, than this.

why not just make chaos armor and be done with it?

but i do like the idea, even tho it would drive me insane trying to get the things to drop.

chaos armor would be cool as long as there are at least a few non chaos parts to it (but not the ugly monk tatoo armor underwear) lol

and im all for new armor skins

Why stop with armor? I'm sure Anet could add weps or minis and just make these "Supreme tokens." If they wanted to, they could port some of the models for the HoM that are going to be implemented in GW2, and save time trying to design things.

Honestly, I was a bit dissapointed that they did not implement this in the first place when they decided to release dungeons. Instead of playing a game of chance for super-rare items, and giving pathetic rewards constantly, the tokens would at least give players that weren't lucky something to look foward at the end of a run to show for their time investment.

There's no point in creating more armor sets for each profession that come with stupidly huge hoops to jump through in order to obtain them and will be subjectively good or bad depending on people's tastes anyways. We already have a supreme armor in GW called Obsidian. Not everybody likes how they look, but that's not a good enough excuse for a new set of ten armors to be produced that would be just as vulnerable to player preference as the Obsidian armors.

The only thing that's really right here in this idea is how restrictive it is. Story books aren't tradeable. Essences of X are, I'm assuming, not tradeable. Supreme tokens are not tradeable. If players want this reward, it is something that is earned through their effort alone, and not something they can outright pay for out of any sizable coffers they may have.

I love the idea but the only way I could think to make this really prestige is making you have all 6 of the prestige rare mats (Amber, Jade, Ectos, Shards, Saph, Ruby). I still totally sign off.

Reminds me too much of tier tokens in WoW and even worse, gathering items for legendary weapons, which is an excuse for elitism and drama. Besides, the richest people already have their look-at-me items and the artists already have their special in-game acknowledgements. Do they really need a special armor, too?

I'm a firm believer that everyone should be able to attain everything in the game. If they want an expensive item, they have to work for it, granted, but nothing should be exclusive to any one set of people and especially not the super rich just because they have tons of money.

You have to also consider competition laws and countries that would be exempt. Some people could be excluded from this chance just because of where they live?

What if a lot of the super rich got to where they are buy gold-buying, stealing and botting. Yes..we really need to reward that.

The entire HoM system rewards the super rich & the super patient. It's one big grind-fest for those of us who aren't rich, and a walk in the park for those who can afford to pay someone else to do all the work for them. This is no different. If you can afford to do it the easy way then it's an insta-reward for the rich, if you can't it's a grind for the rest of us. Big deal.

What they're proposing isn't exclusive to anyone. Us non-rich players can get the armor, too, just not as quickly or easily. This isn't unfair, because the armor isn't necessary for playing the game.

Quote:

They would only be excluded from the design competition, and this is no different than any of the other MANY contests ANet has held every year since the game went live. In other words: it's an irrelevant point.

Quote:

See above. They're already rewarded for it by having easy access to 50/50 HoM. This won't stop ANet from running contests or implementing content that requires large sums of in-game money. Gold buyers, botters, and account thieves are a comparatively small portion of the community, and they won't punish the rest of us (in the sense of withholding content) for their actions.

I like the idea. I couldn't afford to pay someone to run me through XX amount of book runs or end-game dungeons to get it, but I like the idea of armor designing contests (I wish they'd held more of these over the years), and anything that gets people out of Kamadan and in to the rest of the game gets a thumbs up from me.
